Nutrition to Get Your Cat Back on Track

The right nutrition can help cats look and feel their best. Find out how!

Did you know that 1 in 3 cats are overweight?*

Like us humans, being overweight can lead to many different health issues, like diabetes and arthritis, that affect the quality, and sometimes longevity, of your cat’s life. See our healthy body condition criteria to determine if your cat is overweight.

If you think your cat is overweight, the first step is to talk to your veterinarian to make sure an underlying medical issue isn’t the cause. Once they receive a clean bill of health, your next step is to think about what you feed your cat.

The right food – and the right amount of food – plays a big part in helping your cat achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

So, what should you look for in a cat food?

✓ High Percentage of Lean, High-Quality Protein – like real turkey or chicken, because cats are carnivores.

✓ Low Calories and Carbs – Compare labels. Cats don’t need carbohydrates, and they certainly don’t need a lot of calories if weight is a concern.

✓ Fiber- It helps cats feel full! High-quality, gentle sources of fiber, like pumpkin, can aid in digestion and help keep hunger at bay.

✓ High Moisture – Moisture in wet cat food can also help cats feel full, plus it gives cats important supplemental hydration.

Tiki Cat® Special Light mousse was specially designed to help cats maintain a trim and fit condition, offering 16% fewer calories than Tiki Cat Velvet Mousse with Chicken in Broth. It features high protein from chicken and turkey, L-carnitine to help burn fat, pumpkin to support healthy digestion, and no potatoes or added sugar. Tiki Cat Born Carnivore Light is also a great option for cats who enjoy dry food, offering many of the same ingredients in a crunchy kibble.

Once you’ve chosen a food, follow the feeding guidelines on the package. If you’re not sure about how much to feed your cat, ask your veterinarian.

Next, get your cat moving!

Enjoy some play time with your favorite feline. Limit treats, and indulge your cat with your attention instead. Laser pointers and feather wands are great toys for giving your cat exercise that’s both exciting for them and entertaining for you. Find ways that your cat likes to get exercise, and stick with it.

After all, the rewards are great: the more you focus on your cat’s healthy body condition now, the happier and healthier their lives will be!
